First things first, we note:
In the section „breeding“, you will unfortunately not find any instructions or a „how-to“ manual for insect breeding. This topic is most likely covered quite extensively by others. We only describe the most important basic conditions of our breeding operations so that you can envision how we work and where our priorities lie.
-
Of course, we‘re not going to give anything away!
....however, there really is no secret. Insect breeding is a science, but not witchcraft.
If the „optimal holding parameters“ represent the magic wands, then „hygiene“ is certainly the most powerful magic word. In reality, hygiene is the ultimate nuts and bolts of our breeding operation.
For this reason, BUGS-international also has a separate disinfection area, since all utensils used for breeding – used continuously, from the breeding box to the drinking water sponge – must pass through this disinfection area in regular intervals. The disinfection and sterilisation area is a wide hallway from which various washrooms branch off. For example, there is a room in which the drinking water sponges are freed from impurities and sterilised; in another room plastic boxes are cleaned and disinfected with an industrial washing machine while in the neighbouring washroom the same is done with boxes and mobile shelves.
Insects
All of our insects are bred and raised in plastic boxes that have been built by us. These boxes are neatly stacked in small hangars, which are – depending on the type of insect – precisely climate-controlled. Each corresponding change (in temperature) triggers an alarm.
The boxes have been constructed using a material that can be easily cleaned and disinfected. This is also done on a regular basis. For each restock, the box is disinfected and cleaned several times a week during the breeding phase. In this way, the animals and insects always have a clean home.
FeedBUGS-international only uses feed that is has selected. The feed mixture with which we feed our insects has been approved by us. We pay very close attention that no unwanted „ingredients“ can be found in the components. If paid close attention while reading the BUG-Story, then you know why „BUGS-international“ was founded in the first place. Each contamination (e.g. pathogens), each additional ingredient (e.g. medications) and all residues (e.g. pesticides) that are located in the feed will end up in the insects and from there will be transferred to the animals that feed on the insects.
We take this into consideration by only feeding our insects the highest quality and most natural feed. We also feed our own animals a large volume of feeder insects... and from time to time we even eat some of them ourselves! (See „BUGS & People“) With its name, BUGS-international stands behind the excellent quality of its products. For this reason, our packaging always contains information that tells you where the animals come from.
Environment
BUGS-international is a modern company whose philosophy is not only limited to its „products“. Simply through what we do and how we do it, we are intricately connected with the environment and are obligated to respect it. The technology that we use is always kept up to date if, by doing so, we can reduce the burden on the environment. Most recently, the company updated its lighting system to LED technology.
There is a large photovoltaic system on the rooftop of BUGS-international that produces more power than the company even needs. This is significant, since alone for the hygiene and cleanliness of our insects we use about 800 kilowatt hours of power each day.
Each week, BUGS-international produces several million insects. Through sustainable planning of the operations, only about 5 cubic metres of residual waste remain. All other waste materials are recycled.
